Office 2008 Remote Desktop Client

February 22nd, 2007 by Marc Charbonneau

It’s just a rumor at this point, but I have it on good authority the next version of Office for OSX will include a new, greatly improved Remote Desktop client. This is, of course, good news for anyone using the old RDC client, which hasn’t been updated since way back in 2004. Not that it doesn’t still work well enough, but it’s long overdue for an overhaul.

The six million dollar question is will the new and improved RDC beat out rdesktop? :) Currently rdesktop is vastly superior in terms of capability and most importantly, performance.

There’s nothing wrong with rdesktop, but I’d really prefer something with an OSX front end. I was hoping CoRD would be that something, but at the rate development seems to be going I doubt that will ever happen.

I look forward to seeing what the new developer on the CoRD project does. I would like to see an improved RemoteDesktop as well, although I’m leary about the cost of an MS Office upgrade on my Mac. Due to the fact that I now actually use my Windoze laptop for work, I don’t think I can get the company to spring for a new copy of MS Office for my Macs… I figured I’d just stick with one or more of the alternatives, like Open Office or what not.
